If you don't want to add a certain song to iTunes, but the preview data available in Finder is insufficient, Vox (formerly ToolPlayer) may be the tool you need: it's a small music player that is compatible with a wide variety of audio formats.

MP3, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, AAC, AIFF, Musepack, Monkey's Audio, Apple Lossless, and WAV are just some of the formats that the application supports.

It has a ten band equalizer with personalized sound styles, and a menu where you can add all kinds of special effects to playback - reverb, distortion, echo, flanger, phaser...

Vox doesn't just play audio, but is also capable of exporting your songs to other formats, including: MP3, AAC, AIFF, Apple LossLess, NeXT/Sun, and Wave.
